Land on your bolts
Eleven tips run on the download card while your converted copy comes in. They are a separate list from the Coach Frank loading screen, where caption lines overlap and cannot be read as a manual. Use the card. It goes from the ollie to the grab, the push, the keyboard, the session, the world list, Hardcore, the landing, the grind, and the fan-game mailbox.
Nothing here is a second control scheme. Each line points at a row that already exists: the right stick, the bumpers, A or Space, Esc, Choose World, and the three difficulties.
The eleven lines
Read them in order while the file loads. If a line mentions Freeskate, the current tab label is Skate. The help under that tab still drops you into the world you chose.
- 1.
Pull the right stick back, then flick it forward to ollie. Flick it the other way for a nollie.
This is the whole trick system in one line. The arrow keys do the same shape if you have no pad. Do not tap forward by itself and expect pop.
- 2.
Flick the right stick off to a side on the way up to kickflip or heelflip.
The side flick happens during the ollie, not after you have already landed. Left and right are the two flips. There is no separate flip button.
- 3.
Hold a bumper in the air to grab: left bumper is your left hand, right bumper your right.
On a keyboard those bumpers are Z and X for LB and RB, while Shift and C are the grab triggers. Hold through the air, then release before the bolts.
- 4.
Pushing harder means more speed, and more speed means bigger gaps. Push with A (Space on keyboard).
A is the face button. Space is the key. A longer hold is a harder push. The gap size follows the speed you actually built, not the difficulty name.
- 5.
No controller? WASD steers and the arrow keys are your right stick. Flick them like a thumbstick.
W A S D is the left stick: steer, push off, crouch. The arrows are not a camera. Treat a down-arrow then an up-arrow as the ollie shape.
- 6.
Press Start (Esc) and go to ONLINE to host a session, or join a friend with their code.
Start and Esc are the same door. ONLINE holds Host a Session, Find a Session, and Join with a Code. The code is useless if the world files differ.
- 7.
Port Carverton is big. Choose World in the Freeskate menu to go somewhere else.
The card still uses the older tab name, Freeskate. Since 9 October that tab is Skate and the map row is Choose World. Leave the current file and load another.
- 8.
Bailing is part of skating. Hardcore difficulty makes every landing count.
Hardcore is less air and harsher landings, not a new trick list. Easy is the row for a first session. Normal sits between them. You pick it under FREESKATE or OPTIONS.
- 9.
Land on your bolts. Keep the board level before you touch down.
Bolts means the board is flat under you when the wheels meet the ground. A grab you forget to release will tilt that landing. Let the bumper go before the wheels touch.
- 10.
Ollie into a rail or ledge and hold the stick to keep the grind going.
Pop first, then hold. Letting the stick spring back to center drops the grind. On a touch screen, lifting the right stick also springs it back, so keep the finger down through the rail.
- 11.
This is a fan game, not an EA release. Questions or bugs: root@aaddpp.lol.
The eleventh line is the credit and the mailbox. root@aaddpp.lol is Asher, the client author. Electronic Arts and Black Box are named so you do not send them a browser bug.
Coach Frank is not the card
The Coach Frank screen stacks caption lines on top of each other. That screen is a bad place to take a control from. The card is the list of eleven. That loading screen can sit near 36 frames, slower than the menu, which is another reason not to study text there.
Tip eleven is the boundary: fan game, not an EA release, mailbox root@aaddpp.lol. About This Project in the LEARN category returns to that notice. Electronic Arts and Black Box do not run this client.
While the bar is moving
Spend the wait on the card in order. The first line and the fifth line are one ollie, told once for a stick and once for arrows. The fourth line is the push you do before that pop, on A or on Space, and the gap grows only if that push was long. The ninth line is the landing check after the grab: board flat, bolts down, bumper already released.
The sixth line is the only multiplayer sentence on the card, and it sends you through Start into ONLINE. The seventh line is the map change, even when it still uses the older tab name. The tenth line is the grind hold. The last line is the mailbox for a bug in this browser build, root@aaddpp.lol. If the ollie already works, the second line is the side flick and the eighth line is the harsher difficulty.
The rows they point at
The keys are the right stick, the arrows, and the bumpers. Worlds and Lite Mode sit in the CrossBar. Hosting starts under ONLINE.
